Radiology technologists pertain to the imaging of internal organs and parts administering non radioactive elements into a patient’s bloodstream for diagnostic purposes and utilities. He prepares a patient for a radiological examination by telling him about the procedures while performing a radiography operational technique. A Radiology technician strictly follows instructions given by the doctor as to protect themselves, patients and co-workers from unnecessary exposure to radiation. Other than taking x-ray and operating radiography technique they also keep patients records and adjust and maintain equipment. Experienced, radiographers perform complex tasks like fluoroscopies, computed tomography. Radiographer also specializes in mammography.
Work environment. As for the working atmosphere for a radiologist it becomes very necessary for them to have a strong physical stamina as they keeps on standing on their feet for a longer period of time or turn or lift disabled patients. Some radiographer even travel to patients in packed vans with sophisticated diagnostic equipments. Though there are chances of exposure to the radiation but at a time they minimize chances of hazard by wearing lead aprons, glove and other shielding devices as well as instruments that keeps on tracking level of monitoring. Mostly a radiologic technologist works about 40 hours a week.
Training and Courses: The time period for training in radiography ranges from 1 to 4 years and provide a person aspiring the course with a certificate, an associate degree or a bachelor’s degree. However, two year associate degree programs are the most rational in this prospective. For the purpose of part time learning professionals already in radiography there are 1year certificate programs for experienced radiographer or other individuals from other areas of health care industry like medical technologists and registered nurses who wish to change there area of working. For administrative, teaching or supervisory purposes master’s degree in radiology is desirable.
License and Certification: As to keep mass away from unnecessary exposure to medical and dental radiation there are Federal legislation which ensures that operators of radiologic equipments are properly trained. For the purpose federal government has set certain standards for states for accrediting various training programs. The American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) provides voluntary certification for radiologic technologists. 35 states use ARRT administered exams for the State licensing purposes. For certification, radiographer must have degree of an accredited program and should pass an examination. And certification is beneficial in itself as many a number of employers prefer hiring certified radiographers.
Job Outlook: Under many surveys as conducted by radio logic technologists it is expected that job opportunities would be going to increase by 15 percent for radio logic technologists. As the population grow day by day it is natural demand for diagnostic imaging to grow many fold
